Gum contouring: suitability, limits and healing
An uneven gumline can have different causes. The safest cosmetic change starts by identifying which tissue determines the tooth's visible length.

Simple laser contouring can refine small areas of excess gum tissue. It is not a universal treatment for a gummy smile, and removing tissue without measuring the underlying structures can expose a root or create an unstable result.
What needs assessing
- Gum health and thickness
- The position of the gum attachment and supporting bone
- Natural tooth proportions
- Lip position and movement
- Planned whitening, bonding, crowns or veneers
Healing and sequencing
Tenderness and temporary colour change can occur while tissue settles. If restorative treatment follows, enough healing time is allowed for the final margin and proportions to become stable.
When another approach is needed
Active gum disease is treated first. More extensive crown lengthening may require specialist periodontal care, while a high-moving lip or jaw relationship will not be corrected by trimming the gumline alone.
