do you actually need?
NHS or private?
NHS dentistry covers treatment that keeps you healthy — examinations, fillings, extractions, dentures. It does not cover cosmetic work: whitening, veneers, bonding and clear aligners are private wherever you go. Most people use a mix of NHS for essentials and private for appearance-led work, and that is perfectly sensible.
General practice or a cosmetic-focused practice?
A general practice looks after routine care for the whole family. A cosmetic-focused practice spends its time on alignment, shape, colour and replacing missing teeth — usually with longer appointments, digital planning and a strong laboratory relationship. Ask which of the two you are walking into.
Who actually does the treatment?
In larger practices the dentist who plans your case is not always the one who does it. Ask who will be holding the handpiece, how many similar cases they complete a year, and whether you will see the same person at every visit.
Referral or in-house?
Implants, complex alignment and gum treatment are sometimes referred out. That is not a bad sign, but it changes the cost and the timeline. Ask early.

Prices vary between practices, so rather than quote anyone else's, here is how each type of treatment is normally priced — so you can compare two quotes properly. Our own fees are published in full on the fees page.
- Consultation
- Some practices charge for a cosmetic consultation, some include it. Either way you should leave with a written plan and a written cost before anything begins.
- Whitening
- Supervised whitening with custom trays is the most predictable cosmetic change per pound spent. Beware anything sold outside a dental practice — in the UK, only a dental professional may legally whiten teeth.
- Composite bonding
- Usually priced per tooth, so the total depends entirely on how many teeth are treated. Ask for the per-tooth fee and the number of teeth in your plan, not a single headline figure.
- Veneers
- Porcelain costs more than composite and lasts longer. The laboratory work and the number of appointments are what drive the difference.
- Clear aligners
- Priced by case complexity, not by brand. A short case correcting the front teeth costs far less than a full-arch case. Ask whether retainers, refinements and whitening are inside or outside the quoted fee.
- Implants
- Quoted as a total for the implant, the abutment and the crown — three separate components. Always ask whether the quote includes all three, plus any bone grafting and the scans.
