Get emergency help for a serious face or jaw injury, heavy mouth bleeding that will not stop, or severe swelling affecting breathing or opening your eyes. Go to A&E for swelling around the eye or neck, or mouth or neck swelling making it difficult to breathe, swallow or speak. Do not drive yourself; ask someone to take you or call 999 for an ambulance.
Urgent dental assessment
When to contact a dentist or NHS 111
- Severe tooth or mouth pain affecting sleep or daily activities, or pain that persists despite painkillers.
- Increasing or persistent swelling, a knocked-out tooth or a tooth injured in an accident.
- A broken or loose filling, crown, bridge, veneer or denture, or severe pain or bleeding after an extraction.
- Toothache lasting more than two days, or pain with fever, pain when biting, red gums, a bad taste or cheek or jaw swelling.
If the practice is closed, cannot offer an appointment, or you cannot reach a dentist, call NHS 111 or use 111 online. NHS 111 assesses urgency and can direct you to appropriate care; it does not guarantee a same-day appointment at Sunny Dental. A&E is for the serious warning signs above, not routine toothache.

Temporary steps for toothache
- If suitable for you, take paracetamol or ibuprofen following the packet instructions. Ask a pharmacist if unsure; do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Eat soft foods, avoid chewing on the painful tooth, and avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods.
- Adults can rinse with warm salt water and spit it out. Do not swallow it; this is not suitable for children.
- Use a soft toothbrush and avoid smoking. Temporary relief does not treat the underlying cause.
