Orthodontist or dentist: who should straighten your teeth?

Adults in Richmond and Twickenham looking to straighten their teeth find both specialist orthodontists and dentists offering clear aligners. Both can be the right choice — for different cases.

A specialist orthodontist has completed additional postgraduate training and is on the GDC specialist list. Many general and cosmetic dentists also provide clear aligners such as Invisalign, often for adults whose main concern is the look of the front teeth. What matters most is that the person treating you can explain what is achievable and when they would refer.

Cases often suited to a dentist providing aligners

    • Mild to moderate crowding or spacing of the front teeth
    • Relapse after childhood braces
    • Straightening before veneers or bonding to reduce how much tooth is altered
    • Adults who want treatment planned alongside cosmetic work

Cases better seen by a specialist orthodontist

    • Significant jaw discrepancies or bite problems
    • Children and teenagers who are still growing
    • Impacted teeth or cases that may need surgery
    • Complex movements beyond what aligners predictably achieve

What to ask at a consultation

    • Will you show me a digital simulation and explain its limits?
    • Is my case within what aligners achieve reliably?
    • What retainers are included, and for how long?
    • Would you refer me to an orthodontist, and why?

    Risks and alternatives

Aligners only work when worn around 22 hours a day; poor wear slows progress or limits the result. Teeth can move back without long-term retainers. Some cases need fixed braces instead, and gum disease must be controlled before any tooth movement. Alternatives include fixed braces, bonding or veneers for small cosmetic changes, or no treatment if the concern is minor.
