Do I need a night guard for teeth grinding?

The signs of grinding, what a custom guard can protect and why jaw pain still needs a proper diagnosis.

A night guard creates a protective surface between the teeth. It can reduce damage from clenching or grinding, but it does not prove that grinding is the cause of every headache, worn edge or painful jaw.

    Signs worth assessing

    • Flattened, chipped or shortened edges
    • Repeated fractures in fillings or bonding
    • Jaw muscle fatigue on waking
    • A partner hearing grinding at night
    • New crowns or veneers needing protection

    Why custom fit matters

A custom appliance is made from a scan or impression and adjusted to the bite. It should fit securely and distribute contact appropriately; a bulky shop-bought guard cannot provide the same individual control.

    Review rather than forget

Bring the guard to dental reviews. Wear marks, fit and any change after new dental work need checking, and worsening pain may require a different diagnosis or referral.
