Same-day composite bonding: when one visit is realistic

Bonding is sculpted directly on the tooth, so small changes can often be finished in a single appointment — but planning still comes first.

Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin shaped by hand and hardened with a light. Because nothing is made in a laboratory, a chipped edge or a small gap can often be treated on the day.

When one visit is usually realistic

    • Repairing a small chip or worn edge
    • Closing one or two small gaps
    • Softening the shape of a single tooth

When more than one visit is wiser

    • Bonding several teeth, where a trial smile or mock-up helps you approve the shape
    • Teeth that need whitening first, as bonding does not whiten
    • Crowding that may suit aligners before bonding
    • Active decay or gum inflammation that needs treating first
    • Grinding habits, which may call for a night guard

    Risks and alternatives

Bonding can chip or stain and needs polishing and occasional repair. Alternatives include porcelain veneers, orthodontics, whitening, or leaving teeth as they are.
