Fixed or removable retainers after orthodontic treatment?

How the two retainer types differ in wear, cleaning, repair and the long-term work of keeping teeth straight.

Teeth can move after aligners or fixed braces because bone and soft tissues continue to adapt. Retention is therefore a long-term phase of orthodontic care, not a short finishing detail.

    Removable retainers

Clear removable retainers are easy to inspect and clean, but they only work when worn. They can split, distort or become loose and should be replaced when fit or condition changes.

    Fixed retainers

A bonded wire works continuously without relying on nightly wear. It needs careful cleaning and regular checks because part of the bond can detach without being immediately obvious.

    The practical answer

Some patients use both types. The right plan depends on the original movement, current alignment, cleaning and the likelihood of consistent wear. A retainer that no longer fits should be assessed rather than forced.
