Clear aligners or Invisalign: is there a difference?

Invisalign is one brand of clear aligner. What matters most is not the logo on the tray, but who plans the movement and checks it along the way.

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made clear trays, each worn for a set period, that move teeth gradually into a planned position. Invisalign is the best-known brand; several other manufacturers make clinician-prescribed aligners too.

    Where aligner treatment really differs

    • Clinician-led versus remote, at-home kits with little or no in-person examination
    • Whether gums, fillings and bite are checked before teeth are moved
    • Planning software and attachments that help more difficult movements
    • Monitoring appointments and refinements if teeth lag behind the plan
    • Retainers and the plan for keeping the result

    What aligners can treat

Crowding, gaps, and mild to moderate bite problems in many adults. Many cases take around six to eighteen months; minor adjustments can be quicker. Some complex bites are better treated with fixed braces, and an honest assessment should say so.

    Risks

Temporary soreness, speech changes for a few days, decay if trays are worn over sugary drinks, and relapse if retainers are not worn. Aligners only work when worn for the recommended hours each day.
