Periodontal treatment is considered when inflammation extends beneath the gumline and affects the tissues supporting the teeth. Pocket measurements, bleeding scores and X-rays establish where deeper cleaning is needed; the same records later show whether it worked.
Before deep cleaning
- Plaque control and home cleaning are reviewed
- Smoking and relevant health factors are discussed
- The mouth is divided into treatment areas only where needed
- Local anaesthetic can be planned for comfort
Treatment and healing
Root surfaces are cleaned below the gumline to reduce deposits and inflammation. Tenderness or sensitivity can follow temporarily. Healing takes time, so the meaningful review happens after the gum has had an opportunity to settle.
Maintenance is part of treatment
Periodontitis is controlled rather than permanently removed by one appointment. Daily cleaning and risk-based maintenance visits protect the improvement; persistent complex sites may need specialist assessment.
